Recovering After Tissue Expander Placement: Tips for Comfort

shutterstock 2396073839 2Tissue expanders are an important step in implant-based breast reconstruction. They’re used to gradually prepare your body for implants or other reconstructive techniques. While they’re essential, recovering from placement isn’t always comfortable.

Dr. Christopher G. Williams and Dr. Jeremy Williams want you to feel supported throughout your journey. Patients at The Breast Center in Lone Tree, Colorado, benefit from getting care that’s specific to their needs. Here’s what you can expect during recovery and some tips to help the process feel better.

What to Expect After Tissue Expander Placement

It’s normal to feel tightness or pressure in your chest after tissue expanders are placed. The expanders stretch the surrounding tissue over time. Some swelling and soreness are also common in the first few days following surgery.

Every patient’s experience is unique, but you can generally expect to resume light activities after about a week. Listen to your body and follow the post-operative instructions from your surgeon.

Tips for Managing Discomfort During Recovery

Below are practical tips to help you stay as comfortable as possible during this time:

  1. Take Medications as Prescribed: Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication to manage the initial discomfort. Take these as directed and discuss any concerns with your care team.
  2. Wear a Supportive Bra: A well-fitting surgical or support bra helps minimize movement and provide gentle compression.
  3. Use Cold Packs: Apply a cold pack (as directed by your surgeon) to ease discomfort during the first few days.
  4. Adjust Your Activities: Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or any movements that would strain your chest. Light activities like short walks are fine and can help promote circulation without overexertion.
  5. Stay Hydrated and Rest: Drinking a lot of water and giving your body the rest it needs are critical to recovery.

While some discomfort is expected, certain symptoms may require immediate attention. Contact your surgeon if you experience persistent pain, unusual swelling, redness, or signs of infection.
