Reasons for Pursuing Corrective Breast Reconstruction
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, implants are used in about 80 percent of breast reconstruction procedures after mastectomy. In many cases, patients are completely satisfied with their implants and the aesthetically pleasing results they offer. Yet it is possible to have concerns after implant-based reconstruction, such as:
- A breast size that is smaller or larger than what you prefer
- An unnatural breast shape
- Incorrect breast position
- Breast asymmetry
- Abnormal surface contour
- Poorly-concealed scarring
- Pain or discomfort
- Excessive implant movement during exercise
- A ruptured implant
- Visible implant rippling
- Infection or cellulitis
- Unpleasant tightness or hardness around an implant
There are a number of reasons why these issues can occur. For example, radiation therapy performed after implant placement can affect the implant and the surrounding tissue. Most commonly, radiation can lead to capsular contracture, a complication where the natural scar tissue around an implant begins to shrink or thicken. The skill and experience of your original breast reconstruction surgeon will naturally influence your results as well.
Understanding Failed Breast Reconstruction
Sometimes, breast implant complications lead to a failed reconstruction. A failed reconstruction means an issue occurred that prompted the need for implant removal. For example, your implants may have been removed to correct problems such as pain or infection.
Failed reconstruction can be a very negative experience. In some cases, women experience multiple failed reconstruction attempts that leave them feeling like a successful procedure is out of reach. If you are in this situation, know that there are options at Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery that can help you achieve an improved result.
Revision Options for Improving Breast Reconstruction Outcomes
Breast reconstruction revision is often an excellent solution to correct aesthetic concerns, complications, and even failed reconstruction. Corrective surgery can be performed relatively soon after your initial reconstruction or many years down the road.
In some situations, achieving a more favorable result though revision may involve making significant changes to the breast. In others, it may require relatively minor second-stage surgeries. The right approach will vary depending on your unique situation and preferences, and may include:
- Implant removal followed by DIEP Flap autologous reconstruction
- Removing and exchanging your breast implants for newer ones
- Fat grafting
- Breast shaping
- Nipple reconstruction
- Areola pigmentation
