Immediate Reconstruction

However, not everyone is a candidate for immediate reconstruction. If you’re planning to have additional treatments like chemotherapy or radiation after your mastectomy, these could impact your healing. In this case, a delayed approach could be a better fit.

Delayed Reconstruction

Delayed reconstruction occurs months or even years after a mastectomy. This method gives your body time to heal and lets you focus on completing any cancer treatments before having additional surgery.

Some women choose delayed reconstruction to give themselves more time to decide what type of reconstruction feels right for them. You’ll also have more flexibility in case newer techniques and advancements become available in the future.

While delayed reconstruction will mean living without a reconstructed breast for a period of time, many women feel this tradeoff is worth it to be sure their body is fully ready for surgery.
