It’s not always possible to save one or both nipples during a mastectomy. Fortunately, nipple reconstruction surgery exists to recreate the very center portion of the breast. This relatively simple procedure can be performed after breast reconstruction to enhance your cosmetic outcome and provide a more realistic look.
Most women are excellent candidates for nipple reconstruction. However, you may be more likely to experience post-surgical complications if you received radiation therapy. Our board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons will work with you to determine your eligibility for nipple reconstruction.
Nipple Reconstruction Techniques
Several different approaches can be used for nipple reconstruction. Of these, our surgeons often prefer the skin flap technique. It involves creating a small mound that resembles a nipple out of flaps of skin from your reconstructed breast.
If there isn’t enough tissue on your reconstructed breast to form a new nipple, you may be a candidate for a skin graft. Grafts are taken from other parts of the body, such as the thigh or buttocks.
Reconstructed nipples do not have the same function or sensitivity as natural nipples. However, they can help you feel more satisfied with the outcome of your reconstruction.
Areola Pigmentation
Areola pigmentation, sometimes called nipple tattooing, is often used to recreate a more realistic looking areola and nipple. It can be performed after nipple reconstruction or as a standalone service.
Our physicians and nurses have received specialized training to perform medical tattooing. We offer many different pigment options to create the look you want.

There’s no pressure to decide if you want nipple reconstruction surgery or medical tattooing right now. Try prosthetic stick-on nipples or temporary nipple tattoos to get a better idea of what you like. After a while, you may find that you want to pursue a more permanent solution.
