Most women can achieve great results from either autologous reconstruction or implant-based reconstruction. In some situations, however, combining these two techniques will provide the best outcome. This approach is called hybrid breast reconstruction.
Is Autologous Reconstruction with Implants Right for Me?
Hybrid breast reconstruction offers the best of both worlds to the right candidates. There are several reasons why our board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons might suggest autologous reconstruction with implants.
The first reason is that placing a flap of your own tissue above breast implants can provide a more natural result. Implant-based reconstruction relies on the quality of the overlying tissue to ensure the implants can’t be seen or felt. If your skin is thin due to mastectomy or radiation, adding a flap of your tissue may help conceal your implants.
The second reason is that adding implants to an autologous procedure can create more volume than a flap alone. After all, the outcome of autologous reconstruction depends on the amount of excess tissue available in the donor area.
DIEP flap, for example, uses skin and fat from your lower abdomen to rebuild your breast mound. If you want to go this route but don’t have much donor tissue, implants can help you get the fullness and projection you desire.
In the end, the goal of breast reconstruction is not only to restore a flattering breast shape but also to restore your sense of femininity and confidence. While hybrid breast reconstruction is not a common procedure, it can provide some women with the best possible outcome. That’s why our practice has offered this option to our patients for many years.
