If you have breast asymmetry after a lumpectomy, an implant-based reconstruction might not be necessary. At The Breast Center Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery, our board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons have helped countless women restore their shape without breast implants.
1. Fat Grafting Can Fill Mild to Moderate Dents
If you have a dented area around the site of your lumpectomy, our surgeons can use fat grafting to fill out the defect and soften the edges. This can be performed as part of an oncoplastic surgery (where the breast is restored at the same time as your lumpectomy) or after you’ve recovered and are cancer-free.
During this procedure, our surgeons harvest your own abdominal, flank, buttocks, or thigh fat through liposuction. The fat is then injected into your breast to contour the area appropriately. Autologous fat transfer doesn’t require follow-up procedures like getting replacements after implant-based reconstruction.
2. Consider a Breast Reduction for Balance
Sometimes a slight breast reduction can restore a sense of balance. For example, if a lumpectomy decreases the amount of tissue in one of your breasts, the other might look significantly larger. A slight breast reduction can restore symmetry without the need for medical devices like implants.
3. A Breast Lift Could Promote Symmetry
Sometimes a lumpectomy can be concealed with a breast lift. Additionally, a breast lift can help mask any difference in the size of your breasts after a lumpectomy. During this procedure, our surgeons can remove any excess skin or breast tissue or reposition the areola and nipple to ensure your breasts look as similar as possible.
