There’s definitely some planning involved when it comes to recovery after breast reconstruction. From grocery shopping in advance to coordinating with family or friends who can help out after your procedure, there are a lot of logistics.
At The Breast Center Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery, we help our patients prepare with advice for a smoother healing process. One tip is to pull together a cozy recovery wardrobe.
Dressing After Your Breast Reconstruction
You’ll likely want to avoid restrictive clothing or synthetic fabrics in the first few weeks following your recovery, as these can be irritating. You should also look for clothing you can put on without lifting your arms over your head.
A typical recovery wardrobe includes:
- Cardigans or hoodies with front closures and interior pockets to secure any drains.
- Soft cotton camisoles.
- Comfortable button-up shirts.
- Dolman sleeve tops to prevent chafing around your armpits.
- Loose-fitting pants, especially if you had a DIEP flap reconstruction where tissue is taken from the lower abdomen.
- Flat slip-on shoes.
While you might have many of these items in your closet, several post-mastectomy clothing brands design stylish tops, bras, and pants with built-in features to secure drains.
Should I Wear a Bra After My Breast Reconstruction Procedure?
Depending on your chosen procedure, you might or might not need to wear a bra after reconstruction. A surgical bra is typically recommended after implant-based reconstruction since it can help hold drains in place and keep you comfortable as you heal. A bra is generally less necessary after a flap-based surgery.
Our providers can make recommendations based on your unique situation. After completely recovering, your breast size or shape could be different, so you might need to be fitted for new bras again.
