As you consider your breast reconstruction options, you may have the goal of closing the book on this chapter of your life as expediently as possible, so that you can heal and move on. Direct-to-implant reconstruction, also known as single stage reconstruction, offers the advantage of completing the mastectomy and the placement of breast implants in a single operation. As a result, you will be spending less time in surgery and less time recovering.
In a delayed reconstruction, the breast tissue is removed during mastectomy and a device called a “tissue expander” is placed in the breast. The expander gently stretches the skin over time, creating breast pockets in which to place the implant. In a direct-to-implant reconstruction, the expander step is unnecessary.
It is possible for at least one or two more procedures to be performed after an immediate reconstruction:
But for many women, the nipple reconstruction procedures are unnecessary because they are good candidates for nipple-sparing mastectomies. And fat grafting may or may not be needed, depending on the final results.
Direct-to-implant breast reconstruction has the advantage of sparing you from tissue expansion and achieving your breast goals right away. Our board-certified plastic surgeons can determine if you are a good candidate.
