Implants remain the most common method of rebuilding breasts after mastectomy surgery. However, that does not mean they are well-understood by prospective reconstruction patients.
Our board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons want you to have the information you need. Here, we debunk some of the most common myths about implant-based reconstruction.
Myth: Breast Implants Look Unnatural
It is true that autologous or flap-based breast reconstruction tends to offer the most natural outcomes. However, that certainly does not mean that breast implants look unnatural.
Advancements in breast implant technology have made them softer and more lifelike than ever. Our practice particularly favors the smooth silicone implants from Mentor®. There are a variety of options for fullness and firmness, so you are sure to find something that works for your goals.

Myth: Breast Implants are Dangerous
Patients may be concerned after learning about BIA-ALCL. However, the risk of this condition is incredibly low, and it has only been associated with certain models of textured breast implants.
In reality, breast implants are one of the most widely studied medical devices in use today. Both saline and silicone breast implants are considered safe for breast reconstruction surgery.
Myth: You Can’t Get a Mammogram with Breast Implants
You can still receive mammograms if you have breast implants. Mammograms remain an effective way to screen for breast cancer in women with breast implants, according to studies.
It is important to tell the staff that you have breast implants. Your clinic will take special mammogram views to better evaluate your breast tissue. You may also need additional imaging.
