How to Prepare for Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Woman wearing pink breast cancer ribbon in consultation with doctor to prepare for breast reconstruction surgery. There’s a lot to think about in the days and weeks before breast reconstruction surgery. What should you bring to the hospital? How long will recovery take? How do you prepare your home (and yourself) for what’s ahead?

Dr. Christopher Williams and Dr. Jeremy Williams make sure those questions don’t go unanswered. Both are board-certified plastic surgeons with training from The Johns Hopkins Hospital. They bring decades of combined experience in reconstructive care to The Breast Center in Lone Tree and Denver, Colorado. It’s their priority to put your mind at ease before your procedure.

Understand Your Surgical Plan

Breast reconstruction can look very different from one woman to the next. You may have your surgery right after a mastectomy, or it might come later. You may use implants, your own fat, or natural tissue. All of these factors will determine what your surgery and recovery look like.

Taking time to understand your plan should help reduce uncertainty and give you space to prepare both physically and emotionally.

Prepare Your Body

No matter which type of reconstruction you’re having, here are a few common recommendations for preparing your body for surgery:

  • Stop smoking at least four to six weeks before surgery
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications or supplements (as directed)
  • Eat a healthy, protein-rich diet and stay well hydrated
  • Complete any required lab work or pre-op tests
  • Stay lightly active with short walks, if approved
  • Follow all pre-surgery instructions from your care team

Take Care of Your Mind, Too

It’s normal to have mixed emotions, even when you feel sure about your decision. Give yourself space to feel all of it. Talking to other women who’ve been through reconstruction, joining a support group, or checking in with a counselor can help. You’re not alone in this.

Set Yourself Up for a Successful Recovery

A little prep before surgery can make recovery much easier. Plan to have:

  • Loose, front-closing clothes
  • Extra pillows or a recliner
  • Medications and supplies ready
  • Easy meals and snacks on hand
  • A quiet place to rest with essentials nearby
  • Someone to help for the first day or two

With these basics covered, you’ll be ready to relax and recover.
