In a video blog posted on May 29, celebrity chef and author Sandra Lee discussed how she was feeling the first week after double mastectomy. Lee opted for a double mastectomy after a lumpectomy was not able to remove all of the cancerous cells in her breast. At the time, her doctors told her the cancer had not spread beyond the breast. Instead of choosing radiation after the lumpectomy, Lee followed her doctors’ advice to have a mastectomy.
Since announcing her diagnosis in early May, Ms. Lee has been outspoken about early detection with mammograms. Lee is 48, which is two years younger than some authorites’ suggestion that women wait until age 50 to get their first mammogram. Early detection has been shown to have a significant impact on the prognosis and ability to treat breast cancer.
Lee is well-known for her Food Network series Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee. She makes guest appearances on shows including Good Morning America and has released more than 25 books over the years. Since 2005, she has been in a romantic partnership with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been at Ms. Lee’s side throughout the mastectomy surgical process and recovery.
