What Happens After Tissue Expansion?

A tissue expander helps create a breast pocket by gradually stretching the skin and tissue. Saline is added through a port over a series of visits until the pocket is large enough for the next step.

Once expansion is complete, your surgeon may discuss:

• Removing scar tissue from the pocket when needed
• Placing a saline or silicone implant
• Adjusting shape or symmetry

Why the Expansion Stage Can Feel Different

Expanders can feel firm, tight, or awkward, especially after fills. The implant stage often feels different because permanent implants generally feel softer and more natural than tissue expanders.
